If someone were to ask me, “What does your family’s lifestyle look like?” I would promptly reply, “Trying.” Our family tries to live in a healthy way, healthy for ourselves and for our planet; however, we often fail.
We are Ovo-Lacto vegetarians. I was brought up that way. We do our best to stay away from boxed and fried foods, MSG, High Fructose Corn Syrup, lots of preservatives and artificial dyes (especially red 40). Drinking enough water and getting our daily ration of sunshine is always a priority. To relax, my husband and I will have a glass or two of wine on the weekends. At least twice a week we get our exercise at a martial arts dojo. We are conscientious about the things we use and throw away. Instead of plastic bags, we use reusable shopping bags. In general, we are healthy people. However, there is room for improvement.
Ice cream is a hot commodity in our house along with good cheese and fresh bakery bread. While we eat plenty of fruit, our consumption of green vegetables could use some work. Outdoor exercising, as a family, is often minimal. Despite these unhealthy habits, my husband, teenage daughter and young son are at a healthy weight. It is only myself that is overweight. Now is the time for me to step up my game and join the rest of my family in their normalcy.
I will use part of this blog to chronicle my journey into a healthier state of being. This will include progress made updates, tips and tricks I find to be useful, and ways to make your home and our planet a better place to live.
